In my novel, WITH THIS RING, as Ibie James drove into the fenced compound of the house where she lived, she slowed her car and waved warmly at the young security man standing by the black gate. She was a manager—educated, accomplished, and busy. By social standards, she did not have to acknowledge him. Many people in her position would have driven past without a glance, treating his presence as invisible and his role insignificant.
