In my novel WHAT CHANGED YOU, which tells the story of King David in the Bible, … David found himself in a moment of deep reflection. Where could he go? Where should he run to? He wondered.

Then it struck him—he should go to Samuel, the prophet who had anointed him. That anointing was the root of all the challenges he was now facing. Surely, Samuel could provide guidance and wisdom. With this thought, David set out toward Ramah.

Samuel was both surprised and happy to see him.

David shared everything that had been happening to him since the day of his anointing. He spoke of God’s faithfulness and protection and of Saul’s relentless pursuit to take his life. The elderly prophet listened intently, his wise eyes fixed on David as he poured out his heart.

When David finally finished, Samuel responded, “I’m not surprised by what you’ve told me—how God has been helping you and how Saul seeks to kill you. The Spirit of the Lord left him on the day God rejected him as king.”

Samuel paused, shaking his head. In a tone heavy with regret, he softly murmured Saul’s name, almost as though mourning what could have been.

“Why did God reject him?” David asked earnestly.

Samuel sighed deeply. “Saul was rejected because he did not fully obey the words of the God who chose him from among thousands in Israel. On the day he was presented as king, I gave him the words of the Law and wrote them in a book. But he failed to follow them, and I’m certain he stopped reading them altogether.” Samuel stopped to clear his throat …

Dear reader, keep this in mind … it is important to obey God’s instructions fully. Your obedience pleases Him, and it always brings blessings into your life. Trust Him and walk in His ways.
