LOVE ON THE PULPIT – a novel
By: Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi
(Day 17)

At home on Saturday evening, Teni put a chair with a high back by the front window in the living room, and sat down, sending a text message to a friend.

The gate was opened and Teni looked out through the window. A red coloured Espero car drove into the large compound. Her mind went straight to Dave. His car was this type, the same colour as well. Her heart began to race. Every tall man and every red car had brought him to her mind since that day. She had been sure of a spark between them. How wrong could she be?

Then the driver’s door opened and a tall man came out.

“Wha-t?!” Teni exclaimed.

“What is it?” Moroun asked.

“Dave!” She said in almost a whisper.

“Dave?! Who is Dave?” Moroun rushed to her side to peep. “Do you know him?”

“Yes, I think it’s him, I met him at Maryam’s place.” Teni said as she stared on at the man who wore a light blue shirt on jeans trousers, locking his car.

Then he turned and she saw his face. Yes, it is him quite alright. This was the face that had been lingering in her memory.

“Is he here to see you?” Moroun asked.

“I think so.” Teni moved away from the window. “Don’t let him see you.”

Then she looked down at what she wore: it was tie and dye knicker bucker. She should change into something better.

“I’m coming. If the bell rings, open the door for him.” she told Moroun.

Teni rushed into her room in excitement, with her ears open for the sound of the doorbell. As she wore a beautiful pink gown, she expected the bell to ring but it didn’t. She finished and returned to the living room again but Dave was nowhere in sight.

“Where is he?” She asked Moroun.

“He’s gone into the other building.”

“He must have gone there to ask of me. He’ll soon be directed here.” Teni said with certainty as she joined Moroun by the window. “Although I don’t know how he got to know my address.”

About ten minutes later, Teni sighed. “What’s happening? He’s been in there for about thirty minutes now.”

“Or can it be that he’s come to visit another person?” Moroun wondered.

“It’s not likely.” Teni replied, frowning in confusion.

Moments later, they saw him come out with Mr. Dawodu and they were talking.

“He’s come to see Mr. Dawodu!” Teni said disbelievingly as she looked on in shock.

Soon, Dave entered his car and as he drove out of the compound, he looked briefly toward Teni’s flat and she quickly dodged behind the curtains.

When Teni was sure he was gone, she flung the door open and went to Mr. Dawodu’s apartment.

“Uncle, you didn’t tell me you knew Dave!” She accused as soon as she entered.

“Dave?”

“Yes, the man that you saw off now, Dave Coker. I saw you from the window.” She replied, sitting down.

“What do you mean I didn’t tell you?” Mr. Dawodu asked her.

“You didn’t. I was the one telling you about him on Sunday.”

Mr. Dawodu frowned. “I don’t understand. That’s Olamide, my nephew …”

“What?” Teni blinked in confusion, a shiver running down her spine.

She couldn’t have heard correctly. “You mean that’s Olamide? Pastor Olamide? You mean … Olamide is Dave?” She asked in confusion, her heart pounding.

“Yes. Is he the man you said you met recently?”

“Yes. Oh my God!” Impossible! She was alarmed.

Mr. Dawodu burst into laughter at her shocked expression.

Teni sagged back on the chair and held her head with a hand, thoroughly flustered as she recalled her encounters with Olamide …

The first time he called, she had told him she wasn’t interested in getting to know him better. The second time, she went a step further in discouraging him by saying she belonged to someone.

Then they met at Maryam’s place. No wonder he looked at her and conversed freely, he must have recognised her. And all this while she was thinking that he had failed to call her. He had actually called, infact twice, and she still talked about being in a relationship, and he had apologised and ended the call.

What should I do? …

Teni faced Mr. Dawodu and explained her predicament. “You’ve got to help me. What do I do?” She asked desperately. “I don’t want him to think I’m a snob!”

He kept quiet for a moment before answering. “Hmm, Olamide is someone with a mind … a sound mind, he can’t be pushed.”

There was a brief silence before Teni spoke. “But why is he Coker and not Dawodu?”

“Yes, my sister is Mrs. Coker.”
