LOVE ON THE PULPIT – a novel
By: Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi
(Day 16)
Teni laughed, “It’s their level of maturity.”
“Some ladies will even give conditions and descriptions of whom they want. He must be tall, short, black, white, yellow, violet, indigo …”
“But Uncle, it’s not only ladies that do that, men do it as well.”
“You children of nowadays do all sorts of things …”
Teni laughed. “Some men give conditions too. For instance, a man said the lady he will marry must wear glasses.”
“What?” Mr. Dawodu exclaimed and clasped his hands together in shock. “Can you imagine that! Where is God in that? But then, looking at it closely, such a thing hasn’t just started, and the problem is not peculiar to your generation. I can remember when I was young, some men preferred women with big busts and butts.”
Teni smiled and said, “Anyway Uncle, I don’t mind marrying a pastor, but it will have to be my decision and I want to be sure it’s God.”
“Of course! I’m not saying you must marry Olamide. No one should be forced to marry a particular person; we are not in the olden days. It’s just to meet him and pray about it.”
Still smiling, Teni breathed in and out heavily. “Well Uncle, I’ve resolved that if this other man I met doesn’t get in touch, I’ll meet your nephew. It’s a promise.”
“You don’t need to promise me, as if you are doing me a favour. It’s your life, I’m only advising you.” he shrugged.
“I know.”
“As Peter said in the Bible, silver or gold I don’t have …”
“You’re giving me what you have.” Teni finished for him, and they laughed. “Just be praying for me.”
“That’s what people say when they don’t intend to yield.”
In the office on Monday, after struggling to work for some time, Teni finally gave up. She took Dave’s card and studied it. She considered calling him, at least to say hello. She lifted the receiver and dialled, but before it could ring, she dropped it, her hand trembling. If he wanted to speak to her, he would have called her. He probably didn’t feel the same way about her.
But why should she be thinking so much of someone she hardly knew? This is stupid, she told herself. He might even be engaged to be married. Christian ladies would not allow such a man to be free for long.
She eventually decided to go to Maryam’s house, to see if she could get further information on the man that was on her mind. But how would she start the conversation with Maryam without arousing her suspicion?
She eventually decided to set the ball rolling by mentioning the photographs that were taken at the naming ceremony. Yes, she would go on Thursday on her way home from office.
“What about the photographs that were taken at your baby’s naming ceremony?” Teni asked, sitting in Maryam’s living room.
“Oh, let me get them.”
Maryam walked up to the mahogany shelf in a corner of the room. She removed a big album from the shelf and gave it to Teni before she sat down again. The baby was asleep in the cot.
Teni flipped through the album, and when she got to the one with Dave, she stopped.
“This man appears to be nice.”
“Who? You mean Dave?”
“Yes. I like the way he handled and conducted the ceremony. He seemed so sure of himself.”
“Dave is a nice man. He’s my husband’s good friend.”
“He gave me his call card that day.”
“Really? Have you been in touch since then?”
Teni shrugged. “Not really.”
“Maybe he is busy. Dave is very nice. He’s a pastor.”
“That’s interesting!” Dave is a Pastor too! Maybe I am destined to marry a Pastor, Teni thought. If it were a man like Dave, she would not mind. He seemed to carry the presence of God with him, and would be able to lead her.
“Which church is that?”
“Great Grace Chapel.” Maryam supplied.
That sounds familiar. “I think someone has mentioned that church to me before.”
Teni wanted to hear again that he was single, so she asked, “Is he married?”
“No.”
Hmm.
At home on Saturday evening, Teni put a chair with a high back by the front window in the living room, and sat down, sending a text message to a friend.
The gate was opened and Teni looked out through the window. A red coloured Espero car drove into the large compound. Her mind went straight to Dave. His car was this type, the same colour as well. Her heart began to race. Every tall man and every red car had brought him to her mind since that day. She had been sure of a spark between them. How wrong could she be?
Then the driver’s door opened and a tall man came out.
“Wha-t?!” Teni exclaimed.
“What is it?” Moroun asked.
“Dave!” She said in almost a whisper.
“Dave?! Who is Dave?” Moroun rushed to her side to peep. “Do you know him?”
