LOVE ON THE PULPIT – a novel
By: Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi
(Day 4)
Teni dismissed her sister’s comment with the wave of her hand as she said, “I haven’t met the person … but I know I can’t marry him. I’m not interested.”
“Why didn’t you say that to Uncle and his wife? You should have told them straightaway that you’re not interested in meeting the man.” Moroun said.
In the morning of the next day, Teni dressed up and left for Pink Royals where she worked.
Kenny and Damilola, the two people she shared office with, had not come. She sat down and had a short prayer as she normally did. Some minutes later, Damilola came in and they greeted. Still pondering over her discussion with Mr. Dawodu, Teni decided to mention the issue to her.
“If it’s just to meet the guy, that shouldn’t be a problem.” Damilola said carelessly.
“He said the man is a pastor.”
“Oops! Which church?”
“I can’t remember.” Teni answered.
“Well, fine. You can meet him if you want but you have to pray because it’s not easy being a pastor’s wife.”
“That’s precisely my sentiments.” Teni said, and then asked, “What if your husband decides to be a pastor?”
Damilola rolled her eyes, “Well, he has not told me God is calling him to become a pastor. He’s a worker in the church … an active one, so let’s leave it at that. I mean, I don’t think I have the grace to be a pastor’s wife.”
Both of them laughed.
At night, in her bed, Teni found herself still thinking about the issue of Mr. Dawodu’s nephew and she began to pray – Lord, to meet or not to meet the pastor? What should I do if he gets in touch with me? A pastor? Can I marry a pastor? Will I be able to cope? Do I have the grace and what it takes to be a pastor’s wife? Lord, I know what Pastors go through! Not enough money, no car, no food, a life of fasting and sacrifice!
Then she paused. Not that she really knew what Pastors went through, she had only heard about it.
Immediately her conscience condemned her, her line of thinking was wrong. If there was love between a pastor and his wife, there would be a way. She knew this to be true yet her heart revolted, racing around with the comments of Moroun and Damilola. Teni felt confused.
In any case, she didn’t think she would want to be involved with any man at the moment. She had tried her hands at romance twice, and twice, she had been disappointed!
And as her sister said, getting involved and eventually marrying Olamide would get her related to Mr. and Mrs. Dawodu. Lord, I’m not sure about this! I don’t know, her heart cried out to God.
Why did she tell them that some of her friends had told her she might marry a pastor? She suddenly felt that statement was suggestive and Mr. and Mrs. Dawodu might want to put pressure on her. Well, she would have to do something that would put their nephew off, she decided.
The next Sunday, Teni and Moroun went for the evening fellowship. Moroun left immediately it ended while Teni stayed back with Mr. and Mrs. Dawodu.
Mr. Dawodu wanted to know if his nephew had been in touch with her.
Teni shook her head, “No but I don’t think I want him to get in touch.”
“Why not?” Mr. Dawodu asked.
“Well,” Teni rolled her eyes. “I’m not in search of a husband and besides, I don’t like the idea of an arranged relationship.” She said and then added a Scripture, “I believe he that will come will come and will not tarry.”
“This is not arranged. He’s seen you twice and asked us about you.” Mrs. Dawodu said.
Teni had at least three excuses. She smiled as she gave them another one. “I’m not sure I want to marry a pastor.”
She observed that the look on the couple’s faces changed and she wondered if she had said the right thing.
“Why not?” Mrs. Dawodu asked. “It’s an honour to marry a pastor. Not many women are called to be pastors’ wives.”
“That’s precisely my sentiments. I don’t consider myself to be one of such women.” Teni said. She had already talked about not wanting to marry a pastor so she would stick to it and hope they would drop the matter. In any case, she’d rather marry a good Christian than a pastor.
“Why not?”
“To be a pastor’s wife?” She shook her head. “I know what pastors experience and what their wives go through. I know! It’s a big responsibility.” She added, with Damilola’s words ringing in her ears.
“It’s not bigger than what every wife faces.” Mrs. Dawodu said encouragingly.
Teni smiled, “No way, Auntie.” She was not interested. Not Mr. Dawodu’s nephew. She would prefer her man to come from another family.
“Teni, I’m surprised you’re talking this way.” Mr. Dawodu rebuked. “If one of the members of your fellowship should come to you for advice, what would you tell her?”
