MY FIRST LOVE – a novel
By: Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi
(Day 2)

Well, all of them could continue praying for him, Mofe thought. He had no problem with that but he wouldn’t want them to try forcing him to change to be like them. That, he would definitely not allow. He liked his life the way it was.

Lisa was drafting a letter when Anna, her secretary entered. She looked up.

Thirty-year old Anna, a married mother of two, held the visitor’s form out to Lisa. “A man is here to get his daughter registered.”

Lisa put down the pen in her hand and took the form from her. She saw the name first – Mr. Eyituoyo.

“Eyituoyo?” She said under her breath with a frown.

That name reminded her of her first love, Mofe Eyituoyo and she found her heart racing fast as she was transported back to her first three years in a private University when she had a relationship with him and the going was good. But then, at about the time he would travel out of the country to UK with his family, they had a major disagreement which they didn’t resolve. That was how the relationship ended and they lost touch. She had not seen him or heard from him since then.

Lisa was certain though that the man waiting to see her could not be Eyimofe as she called him when in a jovial mood. His mother was the only person who called the full name always. The last she was able to pick from people here and there was that he had returned from UK, married and now lived in Abuja.

Could the man be Toju, Mofe’s younger brother or one of his relations? Whoever it was would be related to Mofe, most likely, she thought, as Eyituoyo wasn’t a common name.

“Let him in.” Lisa said.

“Okay.”

As the secretary turned to leave, Lisa used a hand to brush back the stray strand on her forehead. She knew her makeup was still okay and the soft pink skirt suit she wore looked good on her. She checked her jacket; there was no gap between the buttonholes. Good. She was glad she had chosen to wear this skirt suit in the morning. She hadn’t wanted to buy it last month because the price was a little higher than what she planned to spend but she eventually decided to buy it as it looked good on her.

Lisa tried to invest in her appearance as much as she could. She bought clothes and shoes from time to time and went regularly to the salon to get her hair and nails done. Being the owner of a growing school, she met with parents every day, and she had come to realise that looking good and competent was a necessity in order to gain parents’ confidence, trust and patronage. Image was important to success.

If it was Mofe’s brother, she knew he definitely would tell Mofe that he saw her and they would discuss how she looked. Well, she looked good even if she had to say so herself.

She waited for whoever it was to come in.

The adjoining door opened and Mofe looked up at the secretary.

Holding the door open, she told him, “Mr. Eyituoyo, you may come in please.”

“Thanks.” He responded, then called out to his daughter, “Hey Ama, come here.”

The girl put the red crayon in her hand down and sauntered to him.

Taking her right hand in his left, Mofe stepped through the door.

Lisa saw Anna move back a little and a girl entered, then a man.

Mofe! Oh my God! Lisa thought with an audibly sharp intake of breath and an open mouth.

Mofe looked at the light-complexioned woman seated, ready to greet her when he realised she looked very much like Lisa. He was shocked and a little confused. Was she Lisa or she just looked like her?

The woman rose, surprise written all over her face.

“Lisa?!” He called out.

“Mofe?!”

“Yes!” He answered.

Smiling a little, Anna left, closing the door behind her.

Lisa extended a hand but Mofe ignored it and closed the distance between them, hugging her tightly. “Lisa!”

To be continued.
