Don’t pursue a man, let him pursue you

(Culled from the novel MY DESIRE)

….. On the day, Agnes dressed up and went for the programme.

Sylvester saw her the moment she walked in, and gave her a swift but thorough perusal. She is beautiful, he thought.

A pastor and his wife were present to give a talk on relationship and marriage, and the congregation of about eighty five unmarried people was separated into men and women. The man talked to the men while his wife talked to the ladies.

The wife, also a pastor, told the ladies, “Don’t pursue a man, let him pursue you. Even if you’re sure he’s God’s choice for you, do not pursue him. Waiting for the man to come to you may seem old fashioned to some people, but it’s good and it works. I read a novel sometime ago, With This Ring. In it, a man said that after the death of his wife, some ladies in the church were clearly chasing him and he asked himself – haven’t they been told that chasing a Christian man could push him away? He said some of the ladies were subtle in their approaches while some were not so subtle. What you should do is pray for God’s will, and wait for God to work it out.”

Agnes took a deep breath.

“Also, if you have not started praying about who to marry – in line with God’s will- you need to start. You’re supposed to pray ahead. I need to say this – when you pray, he may not show up immediately, but God will bring him eventually.”

Some ladies clapped.

“While you’re waiting for him to show up, don’t begin to fret or get desperate. God is faithful, alright? He loves you and will help you. Let’s read two Scriptures … Isaiah forty one verse ten.”

Almost immediately, a lady stood and began to read, “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

“Thank you … and Philippians chapter four verses six and seven.”

Another lady stood and read it. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

“So what should you do? Pray, and then continue to serve God, … and be nice.” The woman added. “You should also pray that God would make you the kind of wife you need to be for the man you will marry.”
