Singles, Relationship, and God (Part 1)
By: Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi

After about a minute’s silence, Ann spoke. “I want to ask you about something.”

“Go ahead.” Sam said.

“What is your feeling about Daniel?”

“What do you mean?” He asked.

“What do you think of my relationship with him? I mean … what exactly is God’s will about it? What will God want me to do? Mummie told me some things the other day and I know I shouldn’t be in a relationship with a non-believer but …” She shrugged. “I have some questions in my heart.”

He took a deep breath before he spoke. “What do you think?”

“From what I now know, it’s wrong to continue with him but I want to be very sure. I’ve been praying and thinking about it. I want your opinion before I make a final decision.”

“To understand the will of God, let’s try and answer some questions first. The answers will guide and make you know what God wants.”

“Okay.” She said, to indicate she was listening.

“The first question is, are you now a believer?”

“Yes.” She answered without a moment’s hesitation.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.” She repeated.

“Here’s the second question. Is Daniel a believer?”

“I don’t think so.”

“What do you mean by you don’t think so? From what you know about him and the way he lives, the things he does and the things he doesn’t do, do you think he’s a believer like you and me? Is his lifestyle in line with God’s word? Does he believe what you believe about God?”

She took a deep breath as she considered those questions.

Daniel is not interested in church, he wants sex and he drinks beer especially when he is with his friends.
She shook her head slowly, “No, he is not a believer.”

Sam took another deep breath. “If you know the truth, what will you do with it?”

“I’ll obey.”

“Okay. Let’s search the Scriptures. Open the Bible to Second Corinthians chapter six, and read from verse fourteen.”

Ann took her Bible and began to read, “Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can goodness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the Devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

Ann stopped and looked up at him.

“Continue.” He said. “Read verses seventeen and eighteen.”

“Therefore, come out from them and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

She took a pen and underlined the verses.

He gave her one more Scripture and she read it as well.

Sam told her, “From these Scriptures, what do you think God’s will is?”

“He doesn’t want a believer to marry a non-believer.” Ann answered.
