What’s the appropriate wedding dress for a child of God? (Part 1)
By: Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi
Before I go on, let me quickly say that the kind of wedding dress in the attached picture is not appropriate for a child of God, a child of the King.
But the Lord said to Samuel, “… For man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”(1Samuel 16:7 NKJV)
This scripture does not mean that God does not care about our outward appearance because He does a lot. The inside and the outside matter to Him. This verse simply means that God can see the outside as well as the inside whereas man sees only the outside and will judge based on that. We need to remember that human beings will always look at the outward appearance.
As one of my daughters wrote in her article some time ago, ‘It’s human nature to judge a book by its cover. The way you dress determines how others are going to see you and address you, believe it or not … Cleavage showing? Unnecessary. Underwear revealing? Very unattractive. Now, you have to decide what your new look should be: Trashy or Classy.’
People must be careful how they dress especially if they are Christians. When we know why we must dress in a decent manner, we would stop struggling.
1)What we wear says a lot about us.
In one of my novels ‘My First Love’, Mofe saw Lisa again after about fourteen years and one look at her revealed a lot to him. “You look good.” He told her, with the words ‘polished’ and ‘successful’ coming to his mind.
In the same novel, Lisa explained to Mofe that his daughter would be measured for her uniform when the school resumed. She added, “Until she gets them, she will wear her own clothes. … Her clothes, whether gown or skirt must be at least knee length. Very short clothes are not allowed.”
“Okay.” Mofe repeated and nodded. Ama had some very short clothes but he was sure she also had some that were long enough. If she would need more, he would take her to some stores to buy them.
“If it’s a skirt and a blouse, the blouse should be long enough to be tucked in. We don’t allow tops that expose the body.”
Mofe realised he had brought his daughter to a Christian school.
2)It also says a lot about the state of our hearts.
A decent dress that honours God is a reflection of a renewed heart. What people do or wear reveals who they are.
In the novel ‘You Found Me’, Ann wore a red dress that was very low in upper front and had a thigh-revealing slit on the lower side. It revealed a lot of her cleavage and thigh.
Sam jumped to the conclusion that she couldn’t be a Christian. And so he said, “I’m sure many men must have told you that you are beautiful … But I believe you will radiate more beauty and be a better person if well … you’ll have a good relationship with God. Or do you?”
“What do you mean?” She asked with a frown.
“I’m just wondering if you are a church person.” He said and smiled.
“Well, it depends on what you mean.”
He said, “I mean, do you have a personal relationship with God? … although, I already have my answer.” He was right. She wasn’t a Christian. How could she be committed to the Lord and wear such a dress?
