Can I stop being gay?

By: Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi

Someone sent this to me:

“My first gay experience was at the age of seventeen. It was my third year in the boarding house of a ‘Boys only’ high school. One of the seniors in my room was very nice to me, and I liked him. One night, he asked to share my bed as his bed was wet. I agreed. In the middle of the night, I felt a hand inside the boxers I wore. I slowly opened my eyes and looked down, it was his hand. I was both confused and excited. This was a new experience for me. I didn’t move for some seconds. When I did and looked at him, he smiled but didn’t pull away. I knew what he was doing wasn’t right but I wasn’t sure how to react. That was how I started, and now I’m twenty three. My parents are not aware of this and must never know. It would kill them. I’d like to stop this gay practice, have a normal relationship, get married to a woman someday and have children. What can I do to change?”

Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi :

Gay, homosexuality or lesbianism is to exchange or abandon natural sexual relations of different sex to persons of the same sex. It is a practice where men are sexually attracted to men; and women, instead of the natural sexual relations with men, prefer other women. It’s on television, the internet, in newspapers and magazines. Some developed countries have allowed gay marriages, some ‘churches’ are ordaining gay bishops, and it seems homosexuality is gaining ground.

But no matter what we may be seeing around, or the number of celebrities who are gay, that does not make it right. Homosexuality is the perversion of what God ordained sex to be. Sex was ordained by God for married couples, to unite them and help in procreation but a perversion of this practice has led gay and lesbians seeking redress in courts to be legalized.

God’s word is very clear. Homosexuality is a sin, do not practice it!

New International Version states, “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman, that is detestable!” (Leviticus 18:22)

New Living Translation puts the verse this way, “Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, it is a detestable sin.”

Some other words for detestable are: abominable, horrid, disgusting, repugnant, obnoxious. God destroyed the people of Sodom and Gomorrah in the book of Genesis chapter 19 because they engaged in this shameful act.

Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. (Romans 1:26-28)

Can I stop being gay?

Yes you can stop being gay as you were not born gay. You were introduced to it by that boy. Some gays and lesbians want to believe they were born that way and cannot change but no, that is not true. Nobody is born gay or a lesbian. These people are simply products of what they have yielded to: pornographic films, magazines, songs that portray these practices, friends, and spirits.

Spirits? Yes. Don’t be deceived, there is a spirit behind homosexuality and lesbianism for behind every evil is the devil. Help yourself! Guide your heart.

***Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. (1Corinthians 6:9-10)

***Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. (James 1:16)

These verses make it clear that if people are not careful, they can be deceived without realising it. The Bible also warns us against bad friends and influences.

***Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” (1Corinthians 15:33)

We are also warned to lay aside every filth and overflow of wickedness.

***21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word … (James 1:21-22)

Your body is the temple of God, treat it as such. Jesus said, “nothing from outside defiles a man, but what is taken in from the surroundings.” You were created to glorify God.

Ask God to forgive and cleanse you. He will forgive you and transform your life. Remember, God can and does forgive sexual sins just as He forgives other sins. And start a relationship with Jesus.

Stay away from pornographic magazines and films, and friends who practice homosexuality, so you can have a new start.

Renew your mind with the word of God, go to church, pray regularly and read the Bible so you can know what you need to do and how to live a victorious life.

You can also confide in a trusted and true man / woman of God in order to be properly counselled.
