Bathsheba burst into tears.

**********

Back in the palace, when Bathsheba was with David, she told him, “My grandfather called me.”

“Is he in good health?” He asked, lifting his brows slightly.

     “Yes.”

He suspected she had something on her mind. “What did he say?”

     “He knows about us.”

He stared at her. “Knows about us?”

“Yes. He knows that you slept with me.”

She recounted her discussion with Ahithophel, but didn’t tell him about his curses. What would that achieve? David was the king and a warrior. She wouldn’t want him to turn against her grandfather and father.

“What was his reaction?” As David asked, he already knew the answer.

“He didn’t say much but I could tell that he was angry even though he tried to hide it.”

David sighed. But these boys promised not to tell anyone. How did Ahithophel get to know?

“Did he tell you how he knew?”

She shook her head. “No, but if it wasn’t me and it wasn’t you, then it could only be your servants. Your security men also saw me that evening.”

“But … I know that some of the men around me cannot be trusted but … Jachin, Ethan and Ziv … I trust them.” He said, as he tried to imagine which among all his servants could be responsible.

“Human beings cannot be trusted that way.” She said.

“You are right. This means that some people now know about it.”

     “Obviously.” She confirmed.

She saw his expression harden as he said, “Well, you are now my wife and I don’t have any regret about that. I’m glad you are mine. Your grandfather is one of my advisors but he should keep his opinion on this matter to himself. I’m not interested. I am still the king and you are my wife.” He said.

“He said he won’t discuss it with you.”

     “Wise choice.” He said.

Noting the warning those words carried, she carefully said, “But … I can’t help thinking that things should have been done differently, then all these problems would have been avoided.”

There was silence for some seconds before he responded calmly, “You’re right.”

“Maybe you should have done things differently.” She pointed out quietly.

“Well, it goes to show that I’m not perfect. No one is.” He said and smiled gently as he slid his arm around her waist. “I’m human, we all are and that means we are not without flaws, yet God loves us and uses us. That is what is called grace. What would we do without God’s grace?”

     Bathsheba didn’t respond.

David added, “God knows I’m not perfect. No one is.”

Still wondering how Ahithophel got to know that he committed adultery with Bathsheba, David summoned some of his servants the next morning.

He began, “I have heard that some of you are talking about me and Bathsheba, saying that I slept with her and forcefully made her my wife.”

As he spoke, he looked at them. “I did not force her to be my wife!” He decided to hold on to that one point.

Looking at Jachin, Ethan and Ziv where they stood on a side, he asked them, “Is that not so?”

“It is so, my lord.” Ziv said and the other two nodded their agreement.

“Why then should some people be saying that I forced her to be my wife?”

     No one talked.

“All of you know what happened to Uriah. He died in battle, and I decided to bring Bathsheba to the palace, to take care of her, more so when I heard she was pregnant. Why should anyone have a problem with that? Whoever is responsible for the rumours should stop or else will be in trouble! Leave Bathsheba out of it! She has gone through a lot of things already.”
