Speaking in tongues
By: Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi
Christianity is much more than being born again. Being born again is what qualifies us for other benefits and experiences of salvation.
In John 16:7, Jesus told His disciples, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come to you, but if I depart, I will send Him to you.”
In Acts 1:4, Jesus asked the disciples to stay in Jerusalem until they received the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit would give them power.
And when the Holy Spirit came on them in Acts 2, they began to speak in tongues.
Speaking in tongues is an evidence of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The baptism of the Holy Spirit always comes with tongues.
However, it’s possible for a person to be baptised of the Holy Spirit but not speak in tongues, if the person does not have the understanding that the gift is available.
The Holy Spirit gives the utterance but the person does the speaking. And when you speak in tongues, you’re speaking mysteries.
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
