He wants me? Why? What should I do? Her mouth opened in shock.
Knowing she had to say something, she began, “My lord,”
Putting his left hand around her waist, he used the right one to pull her close and his lips descended on hers. It was not a soft kiss but one of need and urgency!
He felt her stiffen with shock.
Raising his head slightly, he told her in almost a whisper, “Don’t say anything. I want you … and as the king, I must get what I want. Do you understand? Besides, no one will know about it.”
“My lord,” She began again.
But he would have none of that. He tightened his hold and pulled her closer. Bending his head, his lips claimed hers again. This time, the kiss was soft and sweet. He removed the cloth covering her hair and threw it away. As he dug his fingers into her hair, he heard a gasp. Was it him or her or both of them at the same time? He wasn’t sure but that was the least of his problem now, as his senses had exploded.
**********
As Bathsheba was being escorted back to her house by Ethan and Jachin, she wondered at what had happened. The king had just slept with her – a married woman!
Why? How could he have done that when he had many wives and children? And the fact that his servants knew what had transpired behind the closed door of David’s bedchamber made her feel humiliated and ashamed, even dirty. The security guards and other servants might also know why she had been brought to the palace.
Her maid was waiting for her by the entrance of her house. The girl hurriedly stood up and looked at Bathsheba as she saw her coming.
Bathsheba could not bring herself to look at her though; she believed everyone could guess what had happened to her.
Seeing she was safely back in her house, Jachin and Ethan left.
In her room, Bathsheba sat on her bed. She was sure she looked a sight! When David eventually asked her to leave, she had quickly taken the cloth for her hair from the floor and wrapped her hair. Straightening her dress with trembling hands, she had left the room hurriedly. David had followed her. The servants stood up when they saw them emerge from the room, and David instructed two of them to see her back to her house. She wasn’t sure but it seemed the two servants exchanged a smile as they turned to follow her out of the palace.
Many questions flew to her mind, questions that people might ask her. Why had she taken her bath at that time, and at that place?
But … that was the custom … to bathe in the evening, which was exactly what she had done, and it was in her compound! She hadn’t done anything wrong, she told herself. Besides, men were not supposed to watch, so why had the king watched her? And more importantly, why had he decided to sleep with her, knowing she was married?
She couldn’t understand it. If words of it should get out, she would be stoned to death for committing adultery, but she hadn’t planned to cheat on her husband. If she said the king asked his servants to bring her, no one would believe her; they might even say that she asked for it, and that she cheated on her husband; but that was not the case, she was not a loose woman.
So, what should she do? She asked herself as tears sprang to her eyes. Who could she tell? But how could she tell anyone when the king had told her to keep it a secret?
