contd.

Having done so much, and with so much power, he should be able to enjoy some things, such as take any woman he wanted, he told himself. He hadn’t expected to see a woman bathing when he went out on the rooftop, but he had and he must have her. She was so beautiful that he couldn’t take his eyes away from her.

Bathsheba had just finished applying black eyeliner to her eyes when her maid told her that two of the king’s servants wanted to see her.

“The king’s servants … to see me?” Bathsheba asked to confirm, half afraid.

     “Yes.” The young lady said.

Bathsheba was already dressed. Quickly, she took a cloth and wrapped her long hair before going out to see the king’s men.

They told her that the king wanted them to bring her immediately.

     To bring me?

As she followed them through the busy streets, she wondered why the king asked her to be brought to him. She hoped something bad had not happened to her husband, Uriah. Or why else would the king send for her? And why was the king around? This was the season when kings went to war, and the Israelites army had gone to war, including her husband. People looked at them and she could see that they were wondering why the king’s servants were with her.

They got to the security gate of the palace where there were some of the king’s soldiers and servants, and passed through. In the large compound, there were more servants and soldiers who acknowledged them briefly. Inside the palace, she saw Ziv but not the king. Jachin told her to wait where Ethan and Ziv stood while he went into a room.

Bathsheba looked about the large room. If she had not been troubled, not knowing why she had been brought to the palace and what her fate would be, she would have been able to appreciate the elegant arrangement of the expensive furniture in the room. It was magnificent!

                              **********

David heard footsteps and knew the servants must be back. With his heart pounding in anticipation, he got up and went to stand by the window. As he pulled the thick curtain back, fresh air flowed in. He looked out at the garden. It had been a beautiful day, but it seemed it was about to get more beautiful for him.

Jachin entered and said, “She is here, my lord.”

David turned back. “Bring her in.”

     “Yes, my lord.”

     David was happy.

                               **********

Jachin came to Bathsheba and said, “The king wants you to come into his chamber. Follow me.”

Bathsheba was surprised. Why was she being taken into the king’s bedchamber? That was not proper. Should she refuse to go … and risk death penalty?

Ziv told her firmly, “Make sure you do not give the king any trouble.”

With unsteady legs, and wondering what Ziv meant by those words, she followed Jachin to a beautifully carved door. Jachin opened it and they entered.

“She’s here, my lord.” Jachin said and then retreated, shutting the door behind him.

Bathsheba’s eyes briefly took in the furnishing of the room and the decoration of the bed before going to David who stood with his back to her.

He turned slowly and Bathsheba found herself face-to-face with the king over all of Israel.
