Our assurance of salvation cannot be based on feelings. Some people feel a great joy at the moment of Salvation, others do not feel anything. The major reason why our assurance cannot be based on feelings is because Satan might influence or control feelings. To side track Satan, God has given us three things upon which to base our assurance.
(a) The Word of God: Whatever is written in the Word of God cannot be false and it is settled forever. Now it is written, (1 John 5:13), that if you believe Jesus Christ then you know that you have eternal life. There are several other passages in the Bible that support our assurance. For example (John 5:240 and Romans 10:13).
(b) The witness of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:16). Before salvation, the work of the Holy Spirit is to convict a sinner of his sin and make real to him the danger of the judgment to come. Immediately He brings the sinner to the point of salvation, He starts new ministry in the believer, speaking peace to the believer’s soul, thus creating in him the inner rest that confirms to the individual that he really belongs to Jesus now.
(c) The changed life.(2Cor. 5:17). A changed life is an assurance of salvation!
1John 3:9
No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.
Wow! This is powerful. No one who is born of God will continue to sin!!!
Let’s consider verse 10
10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God , nor is He who does not love his brother.
1John 2:3
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1John 2:4
4 He who says , “I know Him , ” and does not keep His commandments , is a liar , and the truth is not in him.
This is powerful!
Anyone who says I know God, and disobeys Him is a liar!
A person who is truly saved is a new creature in Christ. Everyone around sees the change in his/her life. He has new desires, new likes, new dislikes, new loves and new hatreds. Evil habits disappear and deep love for other believers and things of God continue to manifest itself.
