DIVINE INSTRUCTIONS to live by
(By: Pastor Taiwo Iredele Odubiyi)

( 96) Don’t be led by signs or fleeces, but by the Spirit of God.

In my novel MY DESIRE, Agnes put out a fleece by saying, “God, if Sam is the man for me, let him call me on phone within a few days.”

In the evening of the next day, she was cooking … when her phone which was on her bed started ringing. She picked it and when she saw Sam’s name, she was greatly surprised.

Wow! She quickly answered it. “Good evening, Brother Sam.”
“Good evening, Sister Agnes. How are you?”
“I’m fine, thank you. And you?”
“Great.”
After some pleasantries, he thanked her for honouring his invitation to the programme. The call lasted about ten minutes.

As she put her phone down, she said, “Thank You Jesus!” There was no more doubt in her heart about Sam. He was her husband and it was just a matter of time before he’d propose to her. She decided to give a testimony about it in church the next Sunday.

But Sam didn’t propose to her. Instead he said, “I am definitely not God’s will for you.”

Putting out a fleece is from the story of Gideon in the Bible – Judges 6:36-40, when God asked him to go and defeat the Midianites. He wanted to be sure it was really God talking to him, and he asked for a sign. He told God he would put out a fleece of wool, and God should make it wet with dew in the morning but with all the ground dry, then totally dry the next morning and the ground wet.

Sam added, “Putting out a fleece like Gideon did is not a reliable way of knowing God’s will, and you should have known that by now. It’s unfortunate that some Christians still practise this … and in the book of Matthew, Jesus condemned the practice of asking for signs. We are to walk by faith and not by sight or by putting out a fleece.”

Scriptures:

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (Romans 8:14)

Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.”
Mark 8:11‭-‬12 NKJV

I pray this year brings everything that will make you smile in Jesus name.
