THE FOREVER KIND OF LOVE – a novel (25)

Lekan took her cell phone and said, “Since he went on your Facebook page, we should check his page too.”
They laughed.
“What’s his name?” Lekan wanted to know.
Mercy laughed and said nothing.
“Mercy, what’s his name?” Stella also asked.
She told them and Lekan began to press her phone.
When Stella also picked her phone and began to press it, Mercy told them, “Both of you are not serious.”
Lekan asked, “Is that him?”
Mercy laughed.
“He’s not bad looking.”
For about thirty seconds, they didn’t talk as Lekan and Stella glanced through his page.
“He’s definitely a Christian.” Lekan said and put her phone down.
Mercy told them some of the things she knew about Dayo and what they discussed in the car.
Stella looked from Mercy to Lekan, and back to Mercy. “You met yesterday and you discussed to this extent?”
They laughed.
The grandfather clock in the room struck eight.
When they finished eating, Lekan went with Mercy to her room to change the grey skirt. Shortly after, she left.
Later in bed, Mercy carried her laptop, went on Facebook, and clicked on Dayo’s name. This time, she took a long look at his profile picture before checking his postings and photos. She liked all that she saw.

Dayo pressed End and smiled. He plugged back his phone and returned to his seat.
He and Mercy had the same birthday. That is interesting. He was three years older than her. Both of them were unattached. Hmm.
But was she the right woman for him? Going by the little he knew about her, she seemed okay, a ‘wife material’ … like his friends would say. He had come to realise that some women are just not ‘wife material’. For whatever reasons, they simply find it difficult to settle down.
Would Mercy accept him if he proposed to her? Till today, he still wondered what made the lady in his church reject him. He was a Christian and had a job. He had been bothered by the rejection for some days when it happened early last year. He had even wondered if something was wrong but as he prayed, God made him realise that there was nothing wrong with him. The relationship was just not meant to be. God had another person for him.
He decided to pray about Mercy. “Lord, if you have a plan for us, talk to me and talk to her. Let Your will be revealed to us and done in Jesus name.”
When he finished praying, he returned to Facebook. Deciding to update his status, he went to his own page and typed.
What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh what peace we often forfeit,
Oh what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer.
When he finished, he read through it, there was no typographical error. He clicked on the share button and it was posted. Then he signed off.
He went to check his phone, it had finished charging. He took it and went to his room. In bed, he told himself that he would need to get his own apartment very soon. He had wanted to do so last year but changed his mind.
The next day, while on break and eating snacks in the office, Dayo took his phone and tapped on Facebook. He checked the status he posted last night and found that Mercy was one of the eleven people who liked it. There were some comments and he began to read them.
The third comment was from Mercy. She wrote:
Indeed, there’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus. No, not one.
One of his friends responded to Mercy’s comment.
I saw on a guy’s page: There’s not a friend like the lonely Jesus. (Wha-t?) How could Jesus be lonely? Does that even make sense? Oh please!
Dayo smiled. He too had seen someone write ‘lonely Jesus’ instead of ‘lowly Jesus’.
He read another friend’s response to that.
I wonder if they still do spelling in schools. Recently, a guy sent a text to me: I’m sorry I missed your call. I was in the birthroom. (Really? Have you delivered? How’s the baby?) Lol
Dayo chuckled. Birthroom? He read the next comment by a lady.
Someone who is a graduate texted me: My sister and her fiancé will be tying the nuts soon. (Nuts? What kind – peanut, cashew, or almond?! Seriously, do they still teach spellings in schools?)
Dayo read what another person wrote.
