COUNT THE COST
To count the cost is to calculate the consequences of a decision in advance.
In the novel WITH THIS RING, Ibie was considering Femi’s proposal.
There was no doubt in her heart that he was a good man but what would marriage to him be like? … After marriage, would she still find him to be a good man? … Should she marry him? She began to pray, searching her heart. ….
We are expected to count the cost in advance, to consider the consequences or how our decisions will affect our lives.
In Luke 14, Jesus told His disciples to be sure to count the cost.
Jesus turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it — lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’?
Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.
Luke 14:25-32 NKJV
This principle also came up in Luke 9.
As they journeyed on the road, someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
And so, before you make a major decision or a commitment to someone, pray, and think long and hard.
Count the cost – people cost, financial, opportunity, etc, before stepping out so that you don’t have regrets. Let the Holy Spirit guide you.
I pray this year brings everything that will make you smile in Jesus name.
